We don’t always know in the moment when something is truly significant. However, there was a recent event that I thought marked a clear shift toward The First Turning which is marked by a maximum gap between gender roles.
Recently at the University of Akron Zippy Invitational for women’s swimming, a biological man from Penn (swimming on the women’s team) won a race and the crowd did not cheer. When the first woman completed the race (technically coming in second), the crowd cheered wildly.
That is significant. I don’t think this would have happened even six months ago.
Something has shifted. People are no longer willing to go along and remain silent for fear of being ostracized and called names. They knew what was happening was wrong and they refused to participate in it.
Someday we may look back on this event as a turning point in America.
